In 1977, filmmaker John Milius created the Bear surfboard brand for Big Wednesday — one of surfing’s most iconic films, capturing the Malibu scene of the ’60s and early ’70s, a time when, as Milius put it, “boards were made of wood and men were made of iron.”
What started as a movie prop quickly became a real surf legacy. Bear boards, first shaped by Billy Hamilton and later by Randy Rarick in 1980, built a reputation for craftsmanship and the authentic Malibu lifestyle.
That legacy still lives on. Today, Bear Surfboards are shaped by some of the world’s finest craftsmen. At Surfboard Factory Hawaii, we’re proud to feature designs by both Randy Rarick and Roger Hinds.
